Monday 14th May 2018

Disappointing Stream Song and Eityah were both ruled out of the Oaks trial. The two other selections were disappointing. Antagonist drifted in the market, missed the break and never got involved. Elusif also drifted in the market and didn't run with much promise. Both should improve for their seasonal reappearances and I will give them another chance next time.

Two selections on Monday make their seasonal reappearances, so lets hope they are ready to go.

3.25 Wolverhampton

Eyecatcher and Teaser look the most likely types to me. Eyecatcher has some solid novice form, running behind Roaring Lion on second start and Australian School on this start, who won over a mile and a half at Chester last week. The son of Camelot will have to step up on that to defy an opening mark of 73. Teaser is interesting. He ran a very good race last time behind a horse called Martineo, who ran well in what looked a very good novice race at Thirsk on Saturday. He is race fit and as long as he stays the trip, I think a mark of 75 is very fair. The horse I put up at the start of the season and selection is Silver Crescent. He only hinted at signs of ability and does not have a gift of a handicap mark but Ralph Beckett's horses are in excellent form and gets the verdict narrowly ahead of Teaser.

Didn’t show much on first two starts in strong maidens and Goodwood and Newmarket. He was badly outpaced both starts and didn’t show a lot. He was subsequently gelded and showed some improvement on his third start on the AW, again outpaced but picked up nicely in the final furlong. He is by Champs Elysees, whose progeny progress well from two to three. Silver Crescent’s full brother was bought in July 2017 by Rich Ricci to run over hurdles. He’s also a half-brother to Ice blue who finished seventh in a French Derby. He showed much more after a gelding operation and his breeding suggests he should make a much better three-year-old when stepped up in trip, though the handicapper has been quite harsh on achievements to date.

1 pt win SILVER CRESCENT (8/1 Bet365)

8.20 Windsor

Not the most exciting race on the card, but competitive nonetheless. Port of Call caught my eye at the back end of last season when highly tried in novice company. He looks to have been allocated a fair opening mark and should go close if ready to go.

Given three quick runs in September to get him handicapped. Made an eye-catching debut at Sandown, when missing the break but stayed on well in a strong race, where the second, fourth, fifth, ninth and twelfth have all won since. He didn’t handle Epsom on his second start, so that effort can be ignored. No match for a decent looking winner on third start at Kempton, given a hands and heels ride once beaten. He has since been gelded and put away for the winter. The only reservation is that his pedigree doesn’t scream stamina. He looks to have some ability, based on his debut run, so he should be able to pick up a handicap off this mark on a flat galloping track.

1 pt win PORT OF CALL (12/1 Bet365)
